A cell without a forget gate, as in 1997, has f=1. Its input gate and
candidate are constant at i=1 and c~=0.1, its output gate at o=1,
and c0=0. Find c200 and the derivative ∂h/∂c there,
both by the formula 1−tanh2c evaluated in float64 and by
sech2c. Repeat with f=0.9.
Hint
Without forgetting, the cell adds the same amount every step. With f<1 it
approaches ic~/(1−f).
Solution
With f=1, ct=0.1t, so c200=20. Mathematically
∂h/∂c=1−tanh2(20)=sech2(20)=1.699342×10−17.
In float64, tanh(20) rounds to exactly one, because it differs from one by
about 8.5×10−18, less than half the spacing of doubles below one.
The formula 1−tanh2c then returns exactly 0.0.
Either way the output path into the cell is closed. The carry line still
passes gradients from cell to cell with factor one, but no loss on h can send
anything into the cell. On a long unsegmented stream the cell keeps growing,
which is the failure Gers, Schmidhuber and Cummins identified.
With f=0.9, ct=0.1(1−0.9t)/(1−0.9)=1−0.9t, so c200=1.000000 to
six places, and sech2(1)=0.419974. The bound of I.10.T3,
1/(1−φ)=10, is not tight here, but it is finite.
